Linkin Park, Static-X, Disturbed, Drowning Pool are the ones I still listen to. The Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park album is pretty good, was listening to it the other day. Also Ten Thousand Fists by Disturbed.

A friend of mine was a huge Disturbed fan and was going alone. I had nothing else to do that night so I tagged along and paid at the door. Mudvayne were one of the openers. It ended up being a really fun show at a very small venue. Was never a fan of either, but they both won me over that night. Each put on a fantastic show full of energy.

It's interesting that Slipknot are nu metal but they seem to have more credibility than other bands from the genre.

What is nu-metal really? It can't be a genre because Slipknot doesn't sound anything like Linkin Park or Static-X (which is also completely different). It is not about the era in which it came out because Scars On Broadway (which is considered nu-metal I think) didn't exist when the term 'nu-metal' began being used. Some bands (eg Clawfinger) are considered nu-metal but did their thing long before the word was even a thing.

Baggy clothes too.

Yaeh, nu-metal is hard to pinpoint. I guess in the late 90s, bands like Deftones and Korn were new, but nothing like the metal going around at the time. I'd consider Sepulturas Roots album to be a defining moment to at least bridge the gap between more heavy alternative stuff like Incubus to the likes of being considered metal. No solos (usually) lots of bounce in the hiphop influenced drum beats, some DJ scratches, and baggy clothes or masks.
A band like Bullet for my Valentine was way more traditional metal but got big around the same time, never considered nu-metal.
I'd say there's 2 core categories for nu-metal. The heavy "Roots" inspired Slipknots, Mushroom Heads, Korn's etc. And the more hip hop influenced bands like Limp Bizkit and Incubus etc.

Is System of a down nu-metal?

Is System of a down nu-metal? Another tricky one. I'd say yes.

In that case I should add them to my list.

Never thought of System of a Down as nu metal, but there was an aspect to their music which was anti conventional rock/metal.

SOD are so over the top and goofy I'd say they are definitely in a category of their own if they don't fall under the Nu-metal umbrella.

Even though I've never been that interested in that sub-genre, I have fond memories of some of the late'90s/ early to mid '00s new metal/ alternative metal songs/ music videos on MTV. Or perhaps it's fond memories of that era in my life that happen to coincide with the arrival of that music style?
Limp Bizkit was fun to watch.

Remember getting the Limp Bizkit's single for Rollin' in 2000, that song banged.

Demanufacture so awesome i’ve been slightly disappointed ever since. I quite liked Obsolete, Digimortal and Archetype but recent releases haven’t been great. Opinions?

Did you guys dig Linkin Park? I remember their Hybrid Theory album being pretty good. Hybrid Theory is an A+ album. As they're fame was pushed down our throats at the time, I resisted. It was only after seeing them live open for Metallica that I started to appreciate what they were doing. Most of their stuff after that album is whatever/okay. There's a few songs from the Transformers movies that are cool and Breaking the Habit is a cool song.

Vocal delivery for first half of Purify, minus chorus, is rap style. Plus, downtuned guitars, and no solos. Also, Lars channeling Eminem with hairstyle, makes album the best nu metal album.
