It seems that Leper Messiah, Better Than You and Murder One are consensus "winners" of their respective albums. On other albums there is much more variance.

Death Magnetic was great when it came out. A lot of fans didn't expect for them to make another record after St. Anger, me included. So, getting DM was refreshing.
However, looking back they recycled their old formula from previous albums. Banging opener, ballad for 4th song, instrumental towards the end, etc. TDTNC has always felt like a copy job to me...like they were trying to make another Fade to Black or One. I don't hate the song, just doesn't excite me.
Since they've put out 2 more albums since DM, I like their creativity in songs like Atlas Rise, Halo on Fire, Spit Out the Bone, Shadows Follow.
Let's hope they keep making music for years to come!

I agree Halo shares some of the same structure qualities as Fade to Black, but Day that Never Comes shares the same qualities from start to finish. I just remember when I first heard TDTNC, I immediately thought of One and Fade. Halo reminds me of Outlaw Torn. Instead of calling them "ballads", I think of them as a "journey". The verses repeat but after that the song flows through bridges, solo and the outro. |

I think another thing that helps is that they didn't have TDTNC 2 and TDTNC 3 on Hardwired and 72 Seasons. It's starting to be more special. |
