It gets an 8 right out of the gate for me. Could have been an easy 10 if not for a few garbage moments, and that stupid track #4

I'll give it a 10. I did not expect this.
TBA and Load had a baby = 72 Seasons.
Not one stinker on this album. Cannot say that for anything since TBA. I'm actually sitting here listening to this album over and over, very good rhythm and catchy.

I gave it a solid 8 out of a maximum rating of a 9.
Giving it a 10 would mean it would have to match Master of Puppets and I highly doubt that is achievable at this point. It's not fair, but that's the reality when you're a band as great as Metallica.
Things that hold this album back
- No Ballad, and it's sorely missed here.
- Some of the songs are a bit too long and overstay their welcome.
- The sequencing is off on this one. Which is odd because Metallica usually nails it.
- 1 or 2 songs probably could have been left off. (to be fair: this is true for 95% of most records)
- Drums are too loud in the mix. Lars needs to admit he's not the drummer he was 25 years ago and dial himself back a bit.
- Solos. Too wanky and samey. Since St Anger, Lars has relegated Kirk into solo jail. Lars only likes a very specific style of solo and will not let Kirk play anything outside of that box. Free Kirk Hammett!

It's an eight for me. Good, bordering on great. Might get better with age. Very happy with the album. At 11 votes, the average score is 8.45454545, which rounds up to 8.5/10. I'd say that's quite the accomplishment for a band over 40 years into its career.

Except Kirk’s new So What interview confirms the improv thing is all him. Down to acknowledging he repeats licks throughout the album. |

Pros: Riffs are good, songwriting is impactful (despite some cheesy lyric phrasing/rhyming), Glad it wasn't a full on thrash album (i.e. everything is fast)
Cons: Some songs are too long and can be cut down, not enough variation arrangement wise, too straightforward for me, Lars (unfortunately)
