I think 2x4 is great but it does feel a little jammy and underdeveloped. I don't think it was fully fleshed out to play in 1995 but they stuck with it as is for the most part.

I remember my friend playing me 2x4 in 1995 from a live show, and i wasn't that impressed. I do like it now though (because they've released alot stuff worse than that since lol).

The drum intro to 2×4, Sleeps, and AIC Angry Chair were my go-to fuck around on the drums when my drummer would take a break bits for so many years. So simple, yet so instantly recognisable.

Interesting time in my life during 96-97 (good and bad times) the albums Load and Reload remind me of those.

Was thinking about 'the cure' today and how it's actually a pretty cool song.

Its also like an Easter egg in Lars’s drumming from like 1995 to 2003ish. He throws that fill all over the place in Cunning Stunts.

I was just in a mood for the worst of Reload the other day. Was nice and sunny and I was working outside with the tunes going. Bad Seed, Slither, Attitude etc. All those classics lol. Good times.

It's load day baby. I remember this day very well. Last week of Sophomore year. we all showed up to school with the album being like "I got the CD!" "I got the tape!" Me and my friends cut the final hour of school to go see Metallica play at Tower Records. Fucking crazy show. hot as fuck too.
My top 5 on that record The House Jack Built Wasting My Hate Until It Sleeps Bleeding Me Thorn Within

I think the lyrics on that song in particular are an album highlight.

I remember taking the train/ferry with a couple of mates to Copenhagen, rumours had it that something special would be taking place. And yes indeed, massive trucks where blasting out the new record at the towns square. Was awesome. I was 14 at the time.
I remember thinking it was the best shit ever, but when I got home and listened to the record I was very disappointed. Not gonna lie. It grew on me as the years went on but it took time. Today I have a love hate relationship with it, its peaks are to me some of their best songs ever. But the lows are also way down there with their worst.
To me today it’s special because of the production, James’s voice and that it’s so different. Is 2x4 a better song than Creeping Death ? He’ll no, but when I hear it I go crazy and can’t help but bang that old bald head of mine. At certain points I’ve dug all songs on Load except cure and twisted.
Highs: Bleeding Me - contender for their best song ever Outlaw - I hear it maybe once a year - but it’s a treat each time King Nothing - The Sandman if Load - awesome 2x4 - their grooviest song ever Sleeps - very special to me, even more the last few years
Very good: THJB Thorn Within
Quite forgettable but alright I guess Hero of the day Mama said Ronnie - I kinda like it, but it’s also shit - but I like it
Shite Cure - Delete that Poor twisted me - see above

I've been playing a lot of Load recently as the summer rolls in. It just feels like a happy summer album. I still love it, even the lowest points. It just pumps me up and gets me moving.
Highest points goes to Hero Sleeps Bleeding Mama Outlaw Hate Ronnie
Mid points Bitch King House 2x4
Low points Poor Twisted Me Cure

Such a great album from top to bottom. I've only grown to appreciate it more as a complete body of work as I've gotten older. It shows so many sides of the band without ever feeling overly long or bloated like ReLoad, which is crazy for their longest record. Bleeding Me and Outlaw Torn are two of the best songs this band has ever made and they're surrounded by a bunch of hidden gems.
I also appreciate ReLoad for what it is now more because of that. ReLoad gave them a few huge singles that Load did not provide them with, and gave them an outlet to release the rest of the songs that didn't fit. Both of those things kind of help preserve Load as a really good full album experience. Kinda similar to how I still feel about 72 Seasons.

i actually really like Cure. lol
i enjoy playing 2x4 more than i enjoy listening to it.
not a fan or Ronnie or Poor Twisted Me. King Nothing is kind of generic "safe" metallica to me. Bitch is okay. James sounds fucking great on Mama Said and on an album of change ups and unexpected - i appreciate the big swing.

What originally made me a Metallica fan was Until It Sleeps, and a bit later King Nothing. I saw those music videos on MTV way back when, and... the rest is history. Load was the first CD from Metallica that I owned (I had bought Reload on cassette earlier, and taped a few of the earlier albums). Load is the only CD I have ever actually worn out and had to replace.
My top 5 songs from Load in no particular order:
Wasting My Hate Ain't My Bitch 2 X 4 Until It Sleeps King Nothing
And yeah, I'd rather hear any of those five songs live than almost any of the standards. If you took out Bells, One, Puppets, Nothing and Sandman and replaced them with those five, I'd be as happy as a pig in shit.

I used to hate Cure, but I appreciate it now for what it is. Still would prefer the unencumbered Outlaw on the record tho, given the choice.
2x4 fuckin rocks, especially live.
Ironically I was coming in here to say Poor Twisted Me gets too much hate lol. As I get older I fully am understanding and appreciating the blues influences across the second half of the album. PTM just has a sleaze about it.

Yes yes you like those songs because it’s Metallica and everything with James sounds great. I can appreciate every Metallica song ever created because they all have something I like. But. Cure and twisted are shit songs that none of us would ever listen too twice if it said something else on the cd.
No these are not facts, but they kinda are 🥸

Cure's verse is pretty lame but has a kind of AIC swagger to it, but the Uncross your Arms, I do believe sections have, some great badass crunchy parts, but yeah, it's amongst the worst of load but still better than the worst of Reload.

I'd say the only song on Load i can't bear to listen to is probably Ronnie, the rest of it is decent.
