Just checked in to the hotel in Hamburg. Sick as shit, fucking typical 🙄 Ah I see someone else gets hit with the shit luck stick after waiting for those small highlights in life It’s just so freaking unfair. It’s a throat infection and I’m just burning up with fever. The other dudes are out getting drunk while I’m in misery back at the hotel room. Fuck my life

I’m going for sure, but will probably just come for Metallica and stay in the back.
Am currently trying to hype myself up with the show from Copenhell last year. Maybe a top 5 show for me, James was fired up.

Harvester into Leper...
Never expected that. I don't mind, but it's odd, like Fade into Sanitarium or something.

Back from the show, my first show ever with having had not even one beer.
Highlights: - Moth - Battery - Sleeps - Burn AMAZING live song - James vocals were as good as they get, and they were clear as day in every song - James guitar was mostly very crisp, sharp and heavy - James He was in a good mood and he was into it, he more than ever carries this band on his shoulders. - Setlist were in general pretty sweet I think, very strong opening. Was surprised to see Leper. - The crowd. You get the full force of 70.000 people with the stage in the middle, the crowd often drowned out the band. Awesome. Also there were moshing basically from the first to the last song, even through Unforgiven and Whiskey.
Lows: - The drum sound - worst drum sound in ears, they are really not making it easy on themselves with 4 different kits which obviously needs to be adjusted to the sound of the stadium. So every time he switched kit it sounded like shit for 1 or 2 songs. You do the math. Lars plays like Lars plays and I’ve accepted it, but usually he gets by with a huge drum sound. That was not the case today. He did great db, although it was extremely muffled, but there were hardly any fills during the whole show.
- Kirk: I think he played well but honestly I could probably make out not more than 50% of his solos. I thought to myself several times that if I didn’t knew these songs and solo’s by heart I would have no idea what he was playing.
- Rob: It was very hard to hear the bass, and he was also the one who moved around the least. I don’t understand the vocal thing, I think maybe all mic’s are off until someone approaches them and then someone somewhere turns them on. And then forgets it. Most often he would sing small passages and you could not hear a word. Even when he shouted it didn’t get through. In 72 seasons he sang the most balanced in pitch vocals I’ve ever heard him sing. It really doesn’t make any sense.
- Fucking intro’s I think 12 songs had a intro tonight. It just takes the whole mood down every time. And it’s not just song intros, it’s new weird ambient intros. Heck even Creep had a new weird intro. Which played AFTER THE ECSTACY INTRO. What the hell.
- THE SOUND. My god it was dreadful. It was like being at a huge outdoor gig on a flat field in a storm. The different instruments came and went all the time. Burn had amazing sound, but Darkness where completely ruined by non existent snare and guitar. It was so weird, it felt like the sound followed them around on the stage. Every instrument were much more present in the mix when they were in front of you.
- The stage: I gotta say that I’m not a fan, like at all. Yea it’s got cool features, getting the full volume from the crowd is cool, the towers were much more awesome that I thought they would be. But that’s it. You basically see Lars 50% of the show, and as a drummer I love watching him perform, so that sucked. They guys are really good at moving around on stage but at certain points they will all be gathered at one side and then you can’t see shit. And even though we were pretty close to the stage 5 meters away I would say, then it felt like they were so freaking long away from you when they were not in your area. The stage is massive, it’s way way too big. Even the snake pit is freaking huge.
It was great hearing the new songs, and it’s always fun to see a new stage design but I’m mostly left with an underwhelming feeling. I feared the sound and unfortunate it was with good reason.

Listened to some videos taken from other parts of the arena, much better sound. Especially from the seated positions. Kinda annoyed about that.

Another show with very strange sound.
Kirk had amazing sound, very loud and clear solos, but apparently at the expense of James rhythm sound :( He was barely audible in several songs, you could only hear Kirk’s rhythm. We moved around the floor this time, the sound quality fluctuated from song to song, going from some of the most crisp and clear sound I’ve heard from them, down to passages where I couldn’t even recognise the song.
Again we got 4 completely different sounding kits from Lars :-/
Again it happened so many times that the first 5 seconds of vocals when Rob or James started singing in a new mic, were completely absent from the mix. That’s a huge issue for me, it’s so damn unprofessional that a band of this magnitude have these issues.
The screens malfunctioned several times tonight, throughout the whole set lots of pixels where black. The last song saw the screens completely give up and turn green.

Where the hell is the sound board set up? After seeing the same complaints over the last three cities, I imagine you can't go wrong by camping out there. Also, Kimbo , the way you describe the sound moving around seems similar to the way it does when you're in the snake pit on previous tours, but on steroids. Why does it seem so hard to just have an even tone being pumped through the PA? Who cares about "here comes Kirk, let's boost him in this section." Who's the sound guy this go?

We talked about it yesterday, I have no idea how he is placed and how he is supposed to control the sound through a massive arena like that.
I took some vids of certain songs which I would have posted if possible, you can clearly hear how the sound behaved in a weird manner.
It was still a cool experience, we were a little at the back at this show so we could move around the stage for a better sound, and it was fun to pay attention to other things than you normally do. Like how the folks in the seats behaved, they went nuts as well up there. Very cool.
I’m really really not liking the intro to every song thingy, yesterday they replaced the intro to Blackened with something they’ve used before another song earlier on. I can’t remember with one, but it was pretty strange. Also the intro audio is kinda sampled out from the song they are going to play, so if you have a little Metallica knowledge you will guess it pretty easily. That sucks. Like putting a bigass bell in the screens- I wonder what they will open up with.
And one final thing, they generally played well but made soooo many mistakes. As far as I could tell most were due to not being able to communicate properly. Like with Lars at one side, with the back to the pit, and James on the other side, not being able to see each other faces, they depend so much on that non-verbal communication, and it really showed when it was missing.

Interesting feedback, cheers Kimbo
Stage looks too big and wondered how they would go when placed so far apart. The sound thing I didnt consider. Surely Big Mick longtermer is stil with them? Not sure how many other gigs he has, if any....I know he did the Led Zep o2arena 'reunion'

I realise I sound like a negative Nancy.
It was still a really cool experience for sure, and I would not recommend people not to attend this particular tour. I’m probably gonna skip the dates in Denmark though, mainly because it’s played at a venue with historical bad sound.
I just have extremely high standards when it comes to Metallica, heck I’ve been to plenty of concerts with worse sound than this. I applaud them for trying something new and they are always taking changes, which is awesome. It’s also quite something to go on a arena tour with a setup like this at their age, it requires much more than playing in a regular stage.
Just last year I got my balls blown off at Copenhell and I still have that fresh in my memory. So you kinda get a little bummed when the sound is not as good as you know it can get. Which by far is my biggest complaint, I can accept all the other shit.
I’m very curious to which vid they will put up from the shows and how much it will be edited.

One last note: James has been “cheating” for awhile (they all have) with ways to rest while playing. Everyone does really. And it’s not a dig or anything but I never thought I would see the day were Kirk would outpick James at a live show.
Kirk did all the downpicking throughout the songs, as far as I could tell. James are really dialling it back, especially during songs like Creep, Master and Blackened. And I don’t blame him, after all he also has to sing. It’s just come to a place were it’s pretty audible when he does, maybe most won’t hear it, and maybe I wouldn’t either if I didn’t see it on the screens (I would like to think I can pick up on these things anyways though).
It’s a weird thing and I totally understand it, it just feels wrong. I’m sure he is probably hating it more than anyone else.
Anyways - kudos to Kirk.

It would be really freakin cool if at a concert, they could broadcast the soundboard audio to a localized band so you could put ear buds in and have a mixed sound overlay in your ears to blend with the live sound. Like broadcast the guys in ear monitor frequency to the rest of us.

Can't remember the last time I saw Lars so... animated? He's hitting those drums hard and seems to be really enjoying himself.

Anyone want to trade tickets for only 1 show in NY? I have 2 lower bowl (100s) seats for both nights, but I would love to trade one of those tickets for a GA ticket. My surgically reconstructed knee won't let me mosh for 2 nights. Of course I'll pay the difference. TIA Metallica Fam!

Anyone going to the Metallica Live in Cinemas screenings? Honestly it seems like a chore to go to the theatre twice for this. I guess it’s good for those who won’t get to see the tour in person though. metallica.film/
