While I can certainly understand and appreciate the importance of Master of Puppets in the historical sense, I personally don't rate it that high. It's a great record, no doubt, but I think Metallica has at least five better albums.
Kinda the same thing with Megadeth's Rust In Peace. Not my favorite album, although universally revered.

I'm almost tempted to put even Load and Reload ahead of it, but I realize that my fondness of them is clouded by nostalgia, as they were the two newest albums when I first started listening to Metallica.

Picked up a guitar for the first time in years. Jammed some songs from 72 Seasons, for the first time actually. It's quite embarrassing but I only just realised that the awesome lead riff thingy in Burn is a replica of the intro 😂 How the hell have I not noticed that before. It's not a replica though, so I think you're forgiven. : P It has more or less the same amount of notes played at more or less the same time as the intro, but most of the notes are different. It's almost like a (even more evil sounding) harmony version of the intro.

I love this. The first four I can see, but HTSD over MOP is bonkers to me. But I love that you went there. I would, also for nostalgia and therefore no objectivity, put Load ahead of MOP. But that's subjective.

Question is if it was written as an intro or as a bridge riff thingy and reused as another part.

I've been jamming Hardiwred a lot in the last week, and I'd actually consider it as one of their all time best if it didn't have so much bloat on disc 2. I can turn on disc one pretty much whenever, but I have to be in a very "Hardwired" mood for disc two (besides Spit). But there's some songs on there that are better than I ever imagined modern Metallica could get before it came out.
If I had to pick between 72S and Hardwired, I'm back to going with Hardwired. Even if 72S is a more "complete" sounding listen. I'm really starting to appreciate the differences between the albums now though, they weren't really apparent when it first came out.

If every record had a mere 8 songs like the first few albums the whole world would have a very different view on this band and their legacy. Every album besides St. Anger would be considered top tier. Load and Reload should obviously have been 1 album of around 12 songs.
Now there’s a lot of stuff that we would miss out on, and I wouldn’t be without some of those songs, but their overall output would be much stronger.

Now there’s a lot of stuff that we would miss out on, and I wouldn’t be without some of those songs, but their overall output would be much stronger. I used to really think this, and I still do to some extent, but as I get older I realize the human element of making "mistakes" like that. Like for Load/ReLoad, that was the first time the band said "let's just write a shit ton of songs, and they'll all be good so we'll release them all". They already lost some of that primal youthful drive that they had in the 80s, and with that comes way less scrutiny over stuff they wrote. I'm sure a big part of it is also "we're Metallica, we're huge already, this is the right move". But it is ironic that Hardwired with a few less songs could be one of their best albums, and that's the other album they admitted to using all the songs they recorded instead of composing a "best of" for the album. I guess my point is ReLoad needed to happen to show the band they don't need to release every single song they write, but they kinda forgot that lesson again.

Agreeing with you both here. 8-10 songs per album would be fine. It's shit that no one releases physical singles anymore really. They could add the ones that were on the cutting room floor as B sides.

Yeah, unreleased songs as B-sides would have been such a great idea. I miss the old days man.
There's at least 25 songs to be cut from their cataloquge which would make the output way stronger. Not every song can be a MOP or a SBT, but a lot of their songs are way worse than the best songs on the record.

Slither kinda fuckin rocks, not gonna lie. The chorus sometimes can sound a little silly to my ears, but it has such a swagger to it. I can see that or Better Than You be the next (old song) live debut.
