The clunky songs on 72S remind me of Beyond Magnetic, which i did like the oddness of funnily enough.

This is probably the easiest Metallica album to learn tbh. None of the riffs are really expanding the James Hetfield vocabulary

I just listened to Lars’s 72 Seasons interview. Honestly way more boring than I was hoping it’d be. My biggest takeaway was that in the first 5 minutes he was talking about how much he loves Hardwired, and later talked about “compromise” for 10 minutes. I won’t be surprised if Lars is talking about how he’s not huge on this one in five years.

This is probably the easiest Metallica album to learn tbh. None of the riffs are really expanding the James Hetfield vocabulary If I were to be really harsh then there hasn’t been many great Hetfield riffs the last 20+ years. St. Anger - well. DM - there’s a lot of tasty riffs on there but I’m not sure who wrote which. HW - I like several songs a lot but there aren’t really that many killer riffs. 72S - Very weak in the riff department and Kirk wrote some of the better ones. It’s not a Hetfield diss but It’s just jarring reading Lars rambling on and on about James writing 60 world changing riffs every day.

I know people here don't seem to like it but I really like the main Shadows Follow riff.
HW had some good riifs, my favourite being the "So light it up.." pre chorus riff in Moth, Dream No More riff, the mid section in Confusion, main riff of Spit
DM...That Was Just Your Life riff is my favourite on that album

You are normally on point Yepsure but I will never give you that riff. It’s neither good or clever, it’s actually quite below average.
I do like the song as a whole though

St. Anger and 72S are about equal to me in terms of stockness, but 72 Seasons still has a few great, swaggery riffs like the one from You Must Burn yepsure mentioned. Overall though I am with you.
DM and HW has stock riffs but imo the good ones aren't any different in quality from a lot of 80s and 90s riffs. There's so much more music on these new albums so the quantity is definitely not as good as it used to be, but Lords of Summer, That Was Just Your Life, Moth Into Flame, Dream No More, and All Nightmare Long stand out immediately in my head for the riffage.

TUF as well. But most riffs on that album are really just variations of the exact same notes. I also don’t buy the whole Lulu having amazing riffs thing, the Dragon riff is awesome but the rest is as mediocre as they can get

Top post 2000 riffs for me are
St Anger: Last riff in Frantic St Anger "New Level" main riff Sweet Amber Break down "She holds the key ( ? ) Riff
DM - too many to pick, that album is full of fire riffs. Stand outs for me:
BB&S that weird Sabbath riff before the versus.
ANL that middle riff when the Balloon releases all the skulls on the map.
My Apocalypse the sick middle "future and past both disagree" riff and car crash riff
HW Hardwired main riff End of Halo Spit out the Bone main riff
72 Chasing Light weird riff that is sort of like LOS You must Burn riff behind the chorus Harmony riff in Too Far Gone.

I listened to 72 Seasons today and honestly, I think I'd rather listen to St. Anger, especially the live in studio version. It's just a bad fucking record if you ask me. Almost like they cut off the process when they were only halfway through sorting all the ideas out and made an album out of whatever was left. A few songs turned out pretty good, but even Inamorata, the would-be album highlight is marred by a lack of interesting ideas, that goddamn hi-hat and the blatant Black Sabbath ripoff of an intro riff.

I listened to Priests Sad Wings album last night. That quiet part in Dreamer Deceiver sounds very much like Inamorata's middle section. I think Ive pointed it out before but had forgotten until that part started

Yeah to be fair it's still (mostly) decent-ish Metallica. I was a bit harsher than I wanted to be but tbf it was 1am and I was dead tired when I wrote that. I do stand by that it's easily one of my least favorite Metallica albums and I think they could've done better.
There's moments of brilliance and a handful of songs I do like, but I feel so much of it is middling to bad it just drags the whole thing down when you listen to the whole album at once. I ended up skipping some of the tracks halfway through because I was simply bored by them, which is something I rarely have to do. Reload and St. Anger have a few like that, Purify, Slither, Better Than You come to mind. HTSD too but at least in that case an otherwise meh song like Am I Savage? might have a cool-ass super heavy riff in the middle worth listening to, which is something the others lack - and especially the 72S ones.

I think more than ever I want Metallica to write shorter songs. Their songs have been too long for a while but it's especially egregious on this album because the riffs don't justify the track lengths. You don't need an extended middle section every time! There's a reason why Lux Æterna and Too Far Gone are emerging as fan favorites.
