I think they could take best 3-4 songs from each of the DM, HTSD, 72, record them with some killer production (probably hire Bob Rock to do the job), make some tweaks here and there and that would most likely make top 2 Metallica album for me. If they did that then it would be their fifth best album for me.

I love how Shadows Follow is a 3/10 mediocre song but it has maybe the best breakdown of all time. That's why I can't stop listening to it. What? The main shadows follow riff is one of the best on the album! I’m really not hearing it. For me it’s probably one of the worst riiffs on HW and 72s combined. It represents everything I dislike about modern Metallica riffs

It represents everything I dislike about modern Metallica riffs I feel the same about Shadows Follow main riff. The first half is kind of alright but the tail of that riff sounds very amateurish to me. It's like Metallica wrote the first part, then some high school kids band wannabe rockers finished the rest. And it is not about simplicity. Simple things can be good. Like for example the basic chug in the Shadows Follow bridge sounds awesome. The guitar sound could be more aggressive I guess but other than that It is one of the highlights of the album for me.

I think I love Shadows Follow because it’s got some swagger to it and sounds fairly unique in comparison to many of their other modern riffs. No boring E string chugging used as filler, no pick scratches on the strings masking transitions, not variation #467 of the same 0-5-7 riff they’ve been modifying slightly and using since St. Anger.
It’s got some attitude and badass-ness to it that they had in spades on Justice/Black/Load/Garage and have only rarely captured since… I can only think of That Was Just Your Life, Just A Bullet Away and Spit out the Bone that also capture that feeling. I really struggle to explain it but maybe this is just a case of me getting something out of and/or clicking with Shadows Follow the way other people get out of songs like Hardwired and My Apocalypse… songs that I think are pure generic cringe but other fans can’t get enough of.

There's stuff for all of us and that's great.
I heard some random dude playing some of the song, but with a much much more heavy sound. It sounded awesome. I wonder how many of their newer songs would have a total different impact if they still had some of their earlier crunch in them

You thought wrong. HTSD>72S>DM I thought THIS was obvious. 72S > DM > HWTSD Most of the songs on 72S would struggle to make it on Metallica's first 5 albums, so i'm not sure about this.

I think almost every song from DM to the present could have easily been on a follow up album post TBA.

That person came up with decent transitions for the first 3 songs, and then called it a day lmao

Too Far Gone is playing on my local rock station as I type this. Had no idea they've put it into rotation. Weird but cool. Definitely should have been the lead single.

James has come down with Covid so today's show will be rescheduled to next Saturday. Friday's show was cut short as he was said to be struggling with his vocals (14 songs performed).
Not sure how many days one is supposed to be in quarantine in current times, though.

I think I realized I don’t like Room of Mirrors too much because the drum performance… kinda stinks? I feel like every transition has this weird timing issue where Lars just isn’t locking up with the downbeat. I’ve never heard that anywhere else on studio Metallica songs.

I wonder if a live album is being announced tomorrow, or if they just realized Too Far Gone is fire and are trying to push it as a single.

When you can purchase the show you attended, and any other you choose, wpuld a live album project by something they'd do? I would love to see something unique like a live album of tracks from say only 2000 onwards.

God, that Too Far Gone video is terrible, almost as bad as the one for Crown of Barbed Wire.

The video is about overcoming whatever obstacles stand between you and your dreams. Very appropriate given the message of the song.

I feel like every transition has this weird timing issue where Lars just isn’t locking up with the downbeat. I’ve never heard that anywhere else on studio Metallica songs. To me that’s his only decent performance on the whole record 😅 Because of the tempo the song isn’t ruined by constant out of place snare fills, and the fills that are actually there are pretty great for his standard. The only other song with a fill worth noticing is the end of Sleepwalk.
