Thinking about SKOM that it might be a good song, maybe the radio edit is better?

Thinking about SKOM that it might be a good song, maybe the radio edit is better? I miss the "ominous I am us" when I listen to the radio edit, but it makes a way better song cut down. The amount of double time drums in the original was way too much for that mid-tempo riff.

But yeah, I miss the ominous part in skom as well.

Ominous part is one of the album highlights for me. I remember laughing at Kirk in the st Anger DVD when he does that part. It was like for 30 years Kirk was this quiet little mouse who always had his back up mic turned down live, and all of a sudden he was trying to growl like Max from Sepultura or something 😂

I’ve never understood how both he and Rob can be so damn horrible at backing vocals. Yes harmonising with James in certain songs takes some skill, which should be possible with lessons. But simple harsh shouting vocals is literally the easiest thing in the entire world.

After how safe parts of 72 Seasons sound you start to appreciate St. Anger more.
That said, both albums suffer from songs that are way too long. I genuinely think that's modern Metallica's biggest weakness. They need to learn how to trim the fat.

Kirk's "laaanguage of the maaad", and "you live it or lie" are on point, though.

I genuinely think that's modern Metallica's biggest weakness. They need to learn how to trim the fat. That's something that started happening in 2002(3)-ish. And while since DM each album has consistently improved on that issue -- St, Anger being the epitome of overly long songs -- they haven't been able to shake off that vice for good. In some cases it's not the length but the transitions that don't work well. Evindently, none of Bob, Rick or Greg managed to fix that either. Maybe the band (namely James and Lars) lost its mojo at arrangements. Or it's just Lars, who seems to have taken the reins? This is just speculation on my part, I'm thinking aloud. But when they regain the magic it's pure genius -- case in point The Day that Never Comes, Moth into Flame, Spit Out the Bone, Halo on Fire, That Was Just Your Life, U III, Innamorata, etc.

That's true, at least they tried something different on St. Anger, some of the riffs on 72S are just recycled and pants.

Sometimes I think about how St. Anger (the song) was so popular during the By Request tour that they brought it back after 10 years. Nowadays there's a chance to see a St. Anger song on the setlist whereas there was none during the World Magnetic tour.

Nowadays there's a chance to see a St. Anger song on the setlist whereas there was none during the World Magnetic tour. Load too. And you're right, for a few years these were albums people were begging to see any song off of. Since 2019 they've been inching towards setlists with more equal album spread. 2019 as a whole is underrated for some cool sets. That's the year they brought back a rotating St. Anger song slot and played St. Anger for the first time since By Request, as well as Frantic.

Imagine being Rob, you just scored the gig of a lifetime, million dollar cheque and all that, and the first task assigned to you is to learn the entire new shity album and have to perform the whole thing for the DVD. I wonder what Rob thinking while sitting there practicing all those songs.

I kind of like Shoot Me Again. The song is way too long as usual but I think it's pretty catchy.

Just because you don't like something doesn't make it an irrefutable, universal fact.

When it came out, I dug it, I was pumped. It was heavy, very loud, some catchy stuff, but I remember, after the first listen through the day it came out, feeling very drained. Later that evening, sitting down and watching the DVD, again, drained. It is sonically very aggressive and "raw/in your face" gnarly stuff. After the first few weeks of release, the newness wore off and I'd spin the couple of tracks I enjoyed here and there until the concert(s) came and went etc.
Rob must have had to sit down for hours listening to Purify over and over and over again. Something like that could send many people to the loony bin.

Most of those songs are extremely simple and centred around the same few chords. He probably learned Purify in half an hour.
But yeah he probably had to listen many many times to remember if those parts should be repeated 80 or 90 times in a row

I wonder when they will release the St. Anger video game, it must be finished by now?

I wonder when they will release the St. Anger video game, it must be finished by now? They did a month ago in the format of Fortnite. It was pretty much the exact thing in the old trailer you posted. There was even a big Metallica stage that would spawn in the sky with Metallica holograms and all that. I completed all the Metallica quests and my Fortnite wallpaper is now this cool Metallica cartoon artwork thing.

Sometimes, when my mind is silent and the day is calm, I think about those lyrics Dr. Phil tried to pass on to the band. We'll never know what was on that paper, and sometimes I really wish we did. You think they were worse than some of Lou's lyrics for Lulu 🤔
