Has anyone heard this Dirty Window solo before, it's really great and it's from 2003! I wish Lars did not want to ride the Nu Metal/Alt Metal wave and strip the album from solos. Yeah I’ve heard it live a few times, it’s not bad but adding stuff like that to an original song always sits wrong with me.

Wasn't it Bob who called Kirk and the band up into the control room to discuss solos? I always got the impression it was very much an overall band decision (meaning it was a James, Lars and Bob decision, probably more emphasis on the latter two, with Kirk's opinion completely disregarded) rather than just Lars having a hard-on for nu metal specifically. Stupid and short-sighted either way.

I'm just glad for Kirk's sake that his opinion on the matter is well documented. The fact that his point was 100% on the mark must be something that helps him sleep at night.

I had forgotten about that DW solo. It is cool per se, but doesn't seem to match the song's feel. He's playing a whole different one now, isn't he?

Unnecessary addition but was probably cool if you were there seeing it live. I really like Dirty Window, so as is works for me just fine

The ideas were fresh sounding. I think they also performed the songs very well. Sometimes many fans consider the studio dvd better than the album. I am one of them. But the production was crap and the lack of solos and the prolonged song structures were just a big, wrong decision. St. Anger was a missed opportunity but I do like that era of the band for its significance in Metallica's history.

When I hear live recordings of stanger songs they always sound flat, but I’ve seen several of them performed in person and they were all heavy as fuck. Especially Dirty Window and Unnamed Feeling. I love to hear My World and Skom

Why is "my lifestyle considered my deathstyle" considered cringe? I agree it's lazy and not smart but why is it hated that much?

Perhaps the word "determines" sounds blunt, and it also makes the phrase a bit long when sung?

I remember my Grandfather's funeral was on the day the St Anger single dropped. It was the first time I ever experienced the loss of someone I was really close to (i was 23 at the time).
I remember getting home and taping the song off the radio and just listening to it over and over and over again.
most people hated it, but with the grieving I was experiencing and going through at the time I found the rawness of the song actually quite cathartic. this translated to the entire record for me and I think I enjoyed it a lot more than i might have otherwise.
that album sits a lot differently for me than it does for most due to what i was going through at the time.

In SKOM Lars laughs at Kirks attempts at writing lyrics. My lifestyle determines my deathstyle. Those lyrics ended up as part of the album opener. Always makes me chuckle he wasn't mocking kirk. he was laughing because of how badass it was. that's literally one of the best lines on the entire album. the fact that it ended up on the record is confirmation.

I can't help but get pulled back to that era when I read it. Good times.

Watched the St.Anger vid after a long time and have to say the song isn't that bad (compared to some of the stuff they've released since), its got some bite.

The song is pretty awesome. When that shit dropped, it was probably the heaviest thing they ever released. I hope it gets a go at some point this tour. With modern sounding Metallica playing it, and it fits perfectly with the 72 thematic side of things, it would conquer the world once more (a few select NA,EU cities).

I like the St. Anger DVD but some of the weird ways they changed a few of the songs so soon after writing them bothered me. Like the way they played The Unnamed Feeling. It's a completely different groove.

They really should play a St Anger song, it’s the 20th anniversary since it’s release…

A revamped version of Invisible Kid would be killer. I don't get the hate for that one, it has its flaws, but that riff and the groovy vibes are one of the album's highlights for me. It would sound so sick with modern sound. Heavy AF.

That vocal choice would fit right into the 72 albums vibe. There are much worse vocal choices on St Anger, I don't mind the Invisible Kid ones. That whole album is like James having a nervous breakdown, 72 is like it's hotter sister.

Leading up to the release of St. Anger was exciting times, with the Jump in the Studio videos, the forum, MTV Icon and hiring a new bassist.

The lead up, the release and the following touring was a highlight in my life.
Jump in the fire was amazing to follow
I was at a pre release party with Rob and Lars where they played the DVD a couple of weeks before release. Free bar as well.
Followed them on tour through Europe with my mates. Met Lars several times and had beers with the band on 2 occasions. At the time I loved the album as well. Good times

It was a weird time in many ways. I remember my heart falling out of my body when I read the news item on the site announcing Jason's departure. I (naively) thought this was the end of the band. Plus he was, at that time, my guy so it hit hard. Then, of course, James went off to rehab and it was radio silence for so long. The other guys did their best though. I was a MetClub member during that period so PPM and (especially) the chatroom was like my second home. In fact, I was in the chat room during that segment in SKOM where Lars & Kirk log in. The sentence "Calm down, Jan" Lars said was aimed at a friend of mine who was freaking out cos the guys were there. Then you had JITS and the constant question of "What's on the blurred whiteboard". Driving Rain.... Don't You Think This Outlaw... We Did It Again... Snippets of Dead Kennedy Rolls.... reading So What mag and wondering what the hell song would have the lyric "searching for doughnuts" in it (turns out to be a place holder in Frantic). On a personal note, things were good in my life: working in Blockbuster, moved in with a girlfriend, my band was firing on all cylinders. Then the album came out: it was different, but I liked it. Got to see them in a tiny TV studio, met Phil Towle... good times. The lead up, the release and the following touring was a highlight in my life.
