I remember not being disturbed by the announcement of Jason leaving and James going into rehab -- I knew deep inside the band would go on. I enjoyed Jump in the Studio lot, I also frequented the Encycmet Forums -- the offical boards not so much at the time, though.
Internet was something completely different back then, it was more about reading and trading live shows usibng regular mail-- no YouTube, Google was new, it took forever to download mp3's, speaking of which we were flooded by so-called Metallica new songs.
Good times. One thing I learned the hard way: never pay attention to reviews, I was disappointed when I heard St. Anger. Just digest the whole thing and only then go to the forums or read the reviews.
EDIT: I meant Jump in the Studio

Any memories of St.Anger or the early 2000's period? That's when I became a fan of Metallica, when I bought St. Anger & Kill 'Em All from a Best Buy.

In SKOM Lars laughs at Kirks attempts at writing lyrics. My lifestyle determines my deathstyle. Those lyrics ended up as part of the album opener. Always makes me chuckle

Here's what I remember: Frantic sounding fucking awesome at Icon. The drum sound of that show was stellar. Odd, considering it was on TV.

Those two singles off St. Anger are my least favorite songs. And it's a shame because they have so many interesting parts, but as a whole they ended up being repetitive and tiring to hear. You can even tell James is sort gasping for air when singing live. It's clear they (over)used Pro-Tools to actually compose --. the result was something inorganic that doesn't translate well in a live setting.
I wish they'd give that album a similar treatment like they did with AWMH but electric, that is: edit it out for live purposes. Hell, even re-work it for thr deluxe release boxset of the album whenever that will be: proper snare drum sound, trim the fat, tweak some lyrics here and there. It'll be a smashing success! Bring Bock Rock to re-mix it too!
I also dig the alternate mix of the song St, Anger that can be heard at the back at one of the scenes in the SKOM doc. I think it's when they show the guys surfing, jetskiing, etc.

At the end of the day this is the source of that album's flaws. Exactly. They talked big about "jam sessions" and writing naturally but what they ended up doing was the most unnatural thing possible, just copy-pasting segments to form full songs in ProTools which makes the repetition problem that much worse since it's not just the lyrics being repeated for another verse, it's the performance itself, the drums, the guitars, every-goddamn-thing. It really fucks you up when you listening and is just plain offputting.

Where was this taken from? I don't think St. Anger was on any of those guitar console games, was it? As an isntruemntal, it is cooler indeed. But no, the one I was refering was differently mixed, cleaner, quieter.

Kind of a paradox: the guy that helped them sonically and commercially went on to have his name on this album, his last with the band... So far. The premise was nice: raw, heavier and faster again, garage/jam-like; I was even on board with not having solos but that what we got was badly executed.

What they should've done is demo using ProTools (I think this is still how they write) and then re-record everything raw and live like that in studio DVD. I would've taken a live in studio version of the album with overdubbed vocals over what the actual album is.

I can't seem to find that scene, I've even looked through the bonus material. I recall the camera pans over the Golden Gate Bridge and shows some water sports by the guys and that St. Anger different version is playing at the back...
