I'm through with the first track and, uh, if anyone ever claims Hammett can't play or talks big but never delivers, then please just crawl in a corner and die off. I wasn't expecting much from this EP but this just about blows my fucking mind. Imagine if the next Metallica record opened how Maiden and the Monster did. People would lose their fucking minds and I'd love it because it actually sounds rich with texture and most of all fucking fresh. James and Lars have no fucking excuse if the next record is just HTSD 2. In terms of song structure this is clearly going for something completely different, but there are definitely bits and pieces here that I would have liked to see in Metallica. Maiden and the Monster at 4:30 sounds incredible. If you mixed in some of Hetfield's magic I think we could have some truly excellent stuff. This EP is a good showcase of why Kirk should be more involved in the songwriting if you ask me. Hardwired was good but it was lacking some tonal variety, something this EP has plenty of. I guess James and Lars will have now in Kirk's EP some "competition", a reference point critics will inevitably gauge their upcoming effort with. And it's a good thing. Metallica has produced their best stuff under pressure, when they had to compete with other bands in the '80s/ early '90s, when they had to show everyone who the kings were.

I hope so. If anything, when Kirk suggests something now, I hope they listen. He had a careers worth of ideas bottled up in him and found a way to check this E.P. off his bucket list, something not very possible in the earlier years. I'm just glad he took care of business and let these ideas breath and have life rather than get chopped up and regurgitated by the Hetfield/Ulrich machine. There are many killer bits throughout that could have easily gone that route. That "Am I Evil" marching part that just builds during The Incantation is so simple and been there done that, but is so killer because of the layering of strings and everything.
This whole E.P. is like a dream. One big S&M Call of Ktulu in the studio beast.

Haha love the comment about his missing phone sicjes.
Loving this EP too. Got absolutely reamed by metstore for shipping a CD to Aus. Missed out on a vinyl, but already see the net is full of resales already

I hear bits from his "doodles" over the years.
And some of the tones are just beautiful....I actually hope James is listening and taking it all in for the next band project rather than dismissing it

It’s not bad. I love instrumental music and these are some well crafted songs, with lots of interesting sections with several different “vibes”. A few parts lifted straight from classical pieces but work really well in the context of the songs.
With all that said, the worst parts of the whole EP are the actual solos. The standard sloppy improv stuff that KH has been playing for years. I really wish he took the time to craft some amazing solos to sit with the great songs he wrote. Or at best at least chose some different takes so the ones without the flubbed or missed notes didn’t make it to the final mix.

That's his style bro😎 No, I wish that to. Sadly though, I think it's more about the feel than precision these days.

Yep, the Rolling Stone interview clearly states he was after spontaniety and if he didn't like what he played after 3 or 4 attempts he walked away and tried again another day. One solo was his initial rough take that he felt was better than any proper attempts that followed. So, no surprises, however it seems less of an issue maybe because its instrumental throughout rather than Kirks "spot" on each song.

"Screw you Lars! You don't get to tell me what to do anymore! I'm a free man!"
(Insert off time sloppy scale)

Kirk's solos are unfortunately a lost cause at this point. I never really look forward to the solo when listening to a modern Metallica song, which is a shame. There are some good ones here and there but it's a far cry from his work in the '80s and '90s.

Second half of Maiden and the Monster is a combo of; The Final Countdown Mr Crowley My Friend of Misery Your welcome. ~3:38 - 4:15 is a straight up lift of the classical piece Adagio in G Minor by Tomaso Albinoni. Here's Wolf Hoffman's (from Accept) version. I listen to this album (Wolf's, not Kirk's) a lot, it's awesome:

I will say though.kirks sloppy solo is fitting much better here than in a Metallica song. I have no problem with them on this EP, I quite like them actually.
But in a Met song it needs to be precise and well executed to go a long with the rest.

am I the only one who isn't impressed by the album? I mean it's ok but if I'm going to listen to guitar instrumental music I'll take Satch, Vai and Gilbert anyday 🎸

I listened to this thru headphones last night. What an experience...the music really does conjure up scenes in your head.
I'd love Metallica to carry on from where Kirk has steered this rather than pick up from Hardwired, if you get what I mean

Kirk probably prefers progressive rock to metal, hence this offering.

Vinyl and CD.... havent played it since sometime last year. I wont be able to not compare 72 seasons to it even though Kirk was doing something different

Listed to this today, still like it very much.
It’s weird that the guy who made this also “arranged” the solos for Hardwired and Lux.

He can hide behind those 2 with ease under the Metallica banner. Out on his own, left alone to write during the lockdowns probably had an immense impact on his creative output. Gave him time to let an idea blossom into something wonderful instead of being pruned and trimmed just as the first buds start to sprout and appear.
