Metallica played at The Independent in San Francisco, California. It was their first show with actual audience in two years. The setlist is pretty uneventful - although this was the first time ever they opened with Whiplash, and they don't play Holier Than Thou that often. BUT! The big thing is that Enter Sandman was missing! I don't think they've skipped it very often after its release, when playing an actual concert with a paying audience (and not counting the "DeHaan gig" at Orion festival when they just played Kill 'Em All). Might it actually be a first? Any other thoughts?
Setlist:
Whiplash Ride the Lightning The Memory Remains Now That We're Dead Holier Than Thou No Leaf Clover Sad but True Moth Into Flame Fade to Black For Whom the Bell Tolls Creeping Death One Master of Puppets Encore: Battery Fuel Seek & Destroy

Imagine if post TBA 30th anniversary is going to be an era without NEM and Sandman.
It won't be, but imagine?

Mostly happy to see Cyanide there. DM getting some love. Definitely! One of the rare highlights from that album.

More realistically, I hope not but I wonder if the 16 song set is the new normal. They did 16 for the drive-in too.

When it comes to DM, I'd like them to play That Was Just Your Life again. Never been that fond of Cyanide.

TWJYL is one of their best riffs in the last 20 years but also one of the best examples of sloppy songwriting on DM. The amount of random repeated sections of riff makes no sense, especially that part where they take one of the riffs and just throw a phaser on it.

TWJYL is fantastic, every minute of it. That harmony part still makes the hair on my arms stand up. 🤔Has anyone broke it down side by side with blackened? Like intro, verse, chorus, verse 2, bridge etc? Arrangements are very similar obviously, but I think I shall investigate deeper.
I'd love to see The End of the Line make a come back. The energy was A+ every time I saw them play it. Great song.

Yeah, I remember it was the talk on the official forums how Just Your Life was a modern-day Blackened, and End of the Line was Creeping Death written for the 21st century.

I like every minute of That Was Just Your Life. The one song I feel drags the most on DM is Judas Kiss, which is a shame because it has a killer chorus.
The End of the Line would have been a top tier song for me as well if it wasn't for the solo. Everything outside of that is amazing to me. I like it more than Atlas Rise, which I guess is the most direct comparison.

I wasn't a fan of the solo in TEOTL at first, but one day it just clicked with me. It feels like your brain boiling over right at the point of life meets death, if that makes any sense.

It just fits even though it's not great in itself and I feel the same way about the solo in The thing that should not be.

And don't get me wrong, TWJYL is one of the better songs on that album but also suffers from that classic DM bloat. Nothing is worse than Judas Kiss though, no one asked for a 4 minute solo or whatever it was. Cyanide is still the gold standard from that album in terms of songwriting and length imo, I hope they don't put it away for another 3 years and play it again this weekend.

I like Judas quite a bit; however, I was expecting a different kind of song from hearing the snippet they had on rotation on the Mission: Metallica website. That's the problem with hearing bits and pieces before the actual song/ album, or getting exposed first to the song live, or reading reviews or comments on forums beforehand.
Next time I'll do as I did in the '90s: get a hold of the song/ album first, digest it and then go and see what everybody thinks of them. Lol.

First time I popped DM cd in and heard TWJYL I was blown away and yea I remember discussion about Judas how the "Bow down" part would work live with the audience, then the full song wasnt released. Good times

They really played great in the two surprise shows, Lars sounded really good. I don't do the festival thing anymore, too much work nowadays, lol. But, I would have loved to have been at either of the surprise shows. 20 bucks too? Awesome stuff.
