Bands who aren’t legacy bands don’t have to remind us constantly that they aren’t a legacy band.
They did 5 albums in their first 10 years, and have done 5 albums in their last 30. Metallica, for me, has been all about nostalgia for a long time and I’m fine with that.
The Black Album boxset was far more exciting to me than any concept of new music would be. Their creative output for the last 20 years has been, although decent (mixed) quality, it’s been throwbacks to past ideas/riffs/sounds.
I wish they’d just join us in celebration of their bands past instead of pretending they are still moving forward.

I would imagine if they had even the tiniest bit of any new songs put together there'd be some sort of a tease riff between songs or something.
Also, I remember feeling disappointed like this around 16 years ago so nothing new. It's just how they roll

I was gonna quote a bunch of shit but I figured good tl;dr would be easier for me lol The fire alarm freaked everyone out but not a soul moved. I was 4 heads back from the rail in the pit so there was so way in hell I was going anywhere until I saw an actual fire (yep very smart of everyone in the building). The first half of the show was absolutely incredible. Even though I fkn killed it with the set predictions (see below ) it was so exciting to see rarity after rarity get pulled off and amazing to see a Metallica show get carried by post-TBA material. Like Sic said, I hope they take note that they did this. Everyone around me loved Hardwired -> TEOTL and the energy kept on going. The fans are way more receptive to the newer material than I think the band knows. But James did alude to age a few times this weekend which I've honestly never seen. I'd potentially call these shows the end of an era/the beginning of their "old" era. I noticed James and Lars taking shortcuts when it came to playing more than I have before. Bleeding Me was the highlight. Top 5 Metallica songs easily, and potentially my personal favorite. After seeing Outlaw and not seeing Bleeding at S&M2 I was really hoping they would pull it off here and I'm glad they didn't disappoint. Memory -> Fuel was a huge bummer because I know they could've pulled off a night two song debut but oh well. Honestly though the energy in myself and the people around me really tapered off at Unforgiven and didn't totally come back. Dare I say everyone is getting over the 80s material? In a world where I see them eventually phasing out MOP, Battery, Blackened, One, etc. the first half of the show definitely proved there's a huge fanbase for those newer, groovier songs. Overall this was a 10/10 weekend to be in person for as a die-hard fan since the 30th anniversary shows and a huge full circle moment for me. I knew they wouldn't come close to those 30th shows but how could they? At the end of the day I'm also glad they made it about the 4 of them instead of guests even though it would've been nice to have a Jason appearance. If I was streaming the show I would've checked out after the Load songs, but after being meh about The Unforgiven -> Sandman -> Harvester run, I had to remind myself that I was at a fucking Metallica show and it was still a good time regardless. Imma go ahead and predict... 1. Hardwired 2. The End of the Line 3. St. Anger 4. The Unnamed Feeling 5. I Disappear 6. Turn the Page 7. Fuel 8. Bleeding Me 9. The House Jack Built 10. Enter Sandman 11. My Friend of Misery** 12. ...And Justice For All 13. Master of Puppets 14. Ride The Lightning 15. Whiplash** 16. Seek & Destroy** ** With Jason

Something to think about.....
Yes, they have newer fans but I wouldn't think it's too much of a stretch to say taht the majority of the fan base is odler. We've heard the pre-Load songs quite a bit. So when songs post-TBA appear they get a far better reaction cos they are so unfrequently played. Perhaps the band shoudl take note of this and drop in King Nothin instead of Harvy.... etc a bit more.
Overall, the two shows had some great deep cuts, Fixxxer (even though James couldn't sing it) and was a nice little way to celebrate their career. Am in interested in new music? Kinda. Do I want more elgacy product? Definitely. Am I with this band until the end? No question

To the fuckin end!
I had a moment during the first show when I turned to my wife and was like, "it's been 20 years since Rob joined WTF?" she was like no way, and then did the mental math, then we both sighed.

Well, that was a boring set. Even Fixxxer couldn't save it. James' age starts to show it through his voice. I was worried about this, the live shows for the HWTSD tour were good though.

Thanks for posting here after attending Im sure you will look back and know you made the right call and made the effort...i think u said u might not. Anyway, I got the same vibe from james with the comments about Doing our best, and in particularly telling us that we are convincing them that they are doing the right thing by...dare i say....perservering. Fuck it, there was a shitload of goodness in 2/3rds of that show, and if thats below par to some then move on. The band seems to understand its limitations live but push it, I wish they did the same studio/recording wise at this point. Ive been watching Get Back, maybe my thoughts are swayed but there is still lots of potential for Metallica, i hope its not wasted. Keep talking about new stuff and acknowledging albums might not be the way to go in 2021, so please lets hear what you have before the idea is sterilised and stillborn. Sorry, ranting now , will stop. I did really enjoy today and night 1 too. Happy 40th Oh, and Bmus, you almost nailed the setlist..but Jason was never there with the covid thing imo

Cool set, but they still could've come up with deeper cuts on both nights. I feel kinda the same way about both S&Ms -- some of the obvious choices were missing from the sets.
With the anniversaries now out of the way, 2022 should be the year of new stuff. I'd imagine they wanna show the world something new to tour behind. Right?
Happy 40th anniversary!

They have a pretty consistent touring schedule starting late April. I'm doubting we even see any new stuff next year.

I hope (dont want to say Expect) that they do an official release. Much easier to do that this time compared to the 30th shows. I want that Dirty Window on CD in my car.

It felt a little too informal to be a proper release, but I can see it being released for streaming on nugs or whatever they do now. Or maybe some Amazon Prime exclusive with cleaned up audio since that's where it streamed.

I rewatched night one last night and am planning on turning on night two tonight as I get some stuff done around the house. Looking back a year later, these shows nailed it. I'm sure they could've played a couple more rarities, but under the constraints of two 16 song shows they couldn't have done much better at summarizing their whole career. Plus we finally got Fixxxer and it motivated the band to add a few rarities to the 2022 shows. Now we wait for the 50th anniversary show where they debut Ronnie.
