I thought DM was them playing AJFA riffs with a guitar tone like Load, and that's how they've sounded ever since Kirk started playing rhythm on albums. It seems James got tired of being a multitracking machine after TBA, which is a shame as his scooped tone is what made me a fan.

Less twangy (cos they didn't use Telecasters this time) but as much mids as Load.

"Finding the best guitar tone ever...so I only need to lay down 1 guitar track instead of five, and I'll do it all in one take for that live vibe." JH Where/when did he say that? I think he didn't.

No indeed but that's besides the point. There's a riff on Unforgiven 3 pretty similar to the verse riff in Memory Remains, and the guitar tones sound close to me.

One riff in one song isn't enough to make a statement that DM and Load guitar tones are a like They are generally far from each other, The Memory Remains is also down half a step, if I remember correctly

If you don't believe me, pop one guitar sample from Load and another from DM through a spectrometer, and you'll see they both have way more in common than DM has with AJFA.

I've always thought the majority of Death Magnetic was made up of riffs that had the same bounce and groove of Load/ReLoad mixed with an attempt to arrange them into songs with similar structure to ... And Justice for All.

Yeah, DM is full of Loadish type riffs. That album has a bit of everything. It's great, I love it. The sound never bothered me much. Could have been way better without the dryness and clipping, but compared to some of the albums I've heard over the years, it sounds as good as the Black Album.

If you've been deliberately seeking out really bad sounding albums sure.

We're over halfway through July and still no proper announcement... Which is not unusual dependant on the album's release date. For exampleK - Reveal of DM title: June 14 2008
- Coffin box announcement: July 09 2008
- Cover art released: July 17 2008- Tracklisting revealed: July 23 2008- Album completed announcement: August 10 2008- Album released: September 12 2008So between the title reveal and the album being (officially) release is a day under 3 months. So if the album is out in November (which would make sense as Lars has intimated that he'd like the MOP deluxe box out in September), then August would be the "usual" time for an announcement. But then again - who knows!

I hope they don't store the masters in Kirk's phone. We all know how safe THAT is.

This wait seems more boring than usual. Nothing really exciting has surfaced yet. My checking in on the boards has deceased to maybe once a week if that.

Pretty much the only thing I'm hoping for is that it is worth the wait.

I picked an obvious example just to illustrate my point. If you don't believe me, pop one guitar sample from Load and another from DM through a spectrometer, and you'll see they both have way more in common than DM has with AJFA. I didn't say it resembles AJFA, I said the guitar tone on DM is nothing like the one on Load. It's got nothing to do with riffs being alike or samey. I said the tone was "like Load" because of the way it's EQ'd. Lots of midrange, whereas the old stuff is completely scooped. And the riffs and arrangements are reminiscent of AJFA (e.g. That was just your life, Day that never comes, Suicide & Redemption, etc). I don't know you and I don't know if you're familiar with sound lingo, so I'll explain a bit. More mids makes you sound brighter. Scooped mids make your tone darker and muffled, and tiny, You have to multitrack like hell to have a big sound when using little mids. James was the master at this, but he stopped doing that when Kirk started playing rhythm on albums and Kirk had a lot more mids in his tone than James in the early days. Nowadays both use a lot of midrange, hence me saying the tone on DM is quite close to Load, perhaps just more distorted and less roomy.
