These versions best display Lars' descent into overplaying madness, in my opinion.
1999 - tasteful, serves the song
2019 - fucking snare drum fills every 4 bars in a slow ballad
WHY DOES HE DO IT?

Oh shit I've just seen this - fuck me it's amazing, wish Lars had played like this on S&M 2

I absolutely cannot stand the S&M2 performance of Nothing Else Matters because of all the obnoxious fills, which is a genuine shame because it's really great performance otherwise. He completely ruined it.

I think Lars tries to prove that he doesn't suck by playing so many unnecessary out of tempo fills every 4 bar which makes him suck more than ever.

There are good and subtle ways of playing 'extra' while being interesting also not being obnoxious, and Lars doesn't do well with that. He doesn't have that feather, tech drummer's touch, he's more of a Animal from The Muppets kind of drummer, except not as good as Animal.
Can't blame him for being bored of playing these songs a million times either.

I think that NEM is like Unforgiven. Amazing studio songs that suck live since 1993.

NEM has actually sounded good live since 1993 though, my favourite (don't know why) is the one from Live Earth 2007.

I think Lars tries to prove that he doesn't suck by playing so many unnecessary out of tempo fills every 4 bar which makes him suck more than ever. I don’t even think it’s that. He’s said multiple times that he gets bored paying things the same way so he “improvises” to make playing the same songs more pleasurable to him. I think the Roam tour contributed to that boredom and then the experimentation of the Load era added to the improv vibe. The problem is that his fills consist of only using the snare or the China crash. I’ve said it before, his best playing has been from 96-99: loose but still a backbeat, great choice of fills and not too OTT.

When? In 1992-1993 which are the best live versions of the song and which I can actually listen to he sings lower harmony while Jason and Kirk sing high harmony. I think that he began singing high notes once Jason was gone to save us from the atrocity of Robs higher clean vocals.

In 2007 James began going for the high notes in the chrous again like in the early '90s.

Yeah I think they started doing the exact album arrangement starting with the 20th anniversary tour.
