The guys are playing a drive-in concert screened at a bunch of locations on 8/29:
Pretty cool concept. Given that it won't actually be live, it loses some of its luster, but it'll be nice to see them performing in 2020.

That'll be pretty interesting for some locations who screen this having Metallica blare out their sound systems near residential neighborhoods. Is this just a US based thing though? How many other countries do drive-in movie types nowadays? I thought that was more of an American thing.

Big culture of drive-ins here in Australia which has died off over the years (DVD ->Home Theatres->Netflix,etc) but still some running. I had 2 options close by for many years but now only 1 left and an hour away. Shame really, had many greats nights at the drive-in

I haven't been to a drive in in about 37 years, they all closed down in the 90s save for a few.
Don't they stream the sound into your car? Or do they have speakers outside as well?
Oh well, guess I'm skipping this one out.

Oh well, guess I'm skipping this one out. The ones by me use local receivers to broadcast on unused FM channels in the area. Not sure if that's how they did it back in the day, but it's seamless at the one I go to sometimes. They have 3 movies running at once on 3 channels and there's never any interference between the 3 streams or from other FM broadcasts.

Yeah, the FM thing is how they did it here. I think the last movie I saw at the drive on was like Police Academy 3 in French or something with Joe versus the volcano as the second feature.🤷🏼♂️ Long time ago.

Just my opinion, but I don’t think anything about it is cool. $155 CDN, Three Days Grace opening. And the concept itself. I appreciate that they’re doing something, but maybe PPV is a better option? Many people are hours away from the closest drive in. Even a live drive in show, initially I thought was a decent idea, and then I watched a video, and it just seemed...pretty lame. I’m sure many people will enjoy it though. Oh, and the sound is generally pretty shitty, since it’s over FM radio.

$155 😱 is that per car, or per person?
What a fail 😂 figured it would be like $30
Just glue your tablet to your windshield and pick any concert you so desire, sit in your driveway, drink beers.

Imagine paying $120 US ($167 AUD) to go a drive in by yourself and watch Metallica play a greatest hits set with sound through a shitty little speaker or coming over FM, when you could stay home and watch countless professional shot and mixed (or bootleg) full shows or individual song performances of your choice shows for free on your own huge TV and sound system.
During a global pandemic that is really doing havoc to the US in particular with many thousands sick, dead and out of work. Who's going to drop that sort of money on this? I don't know who they think the target market, and I hope this was something this drive in company approached them to do (and set the price for) and they aren't completely out of touch.

The people in the comments section of that announcement video and Amercian's who don't give a shit about a pandemic. There are anti-mask/pandemic hoaxer Metallica fans out there. I figure they wanted to do something during this pandemic and I'm sure they had a meeting with their management and they concluded this would be a way to have some semblance of a live setting, but without having people be so close to each other. I get why they would get to that conclusion, but it is pricey for a drive-in experience, but at the same time they gotta pay their bills maaannnn (I'm going to assume it's the drive-in's deciding the price).

Live nation is probably choosing the price. Blake Shelton did these and the price was the same. From the reviews, and I’m not surprised, the result was not great.

HA! Did not see the price. Was expecting the typical cost to drive in and watch, $20-25. BTW, before we tuned in our radio to the audio we used to use these things. I always worried my window was gonna crack

Agreed but... something to remember... the ticket price is for cars with up to 6 people in so that works out at $19.16USD per person. So not that much. And they're clearly aware of this as they are bundling in 4 downloads for the S&M2 album so if you can't get 6 people but can get 4 that works out at $28.75USD per person. The cost of a ticket to the cinema PLUS the cost to download the S&M2 album probably comes to more than that. If you look at it as a group thing then it doesn't seem so exorbitant.

Well in that case they shouldn't be encouraging 6 people to spend time in a closed car for a couple of hours during this pandemic which all medical advice advises against being in close proximity with people indoors for more than 15 mins.
They could have united their fanbase who are stuck indoors all over the world with a cool live stream opened to every one with donations going to their charity...but nah $120 tickets to sell during a worldwide crisis.
Seems like a shitty idea to me no matter how you cut it sorry. Just like all the crazily overpriced S&M2 and deluxe car book stuff.

If this is counted as a concert, I can say I paid 20 bucks for S&M 2 lol

Should have been a streaming thing for $5 with a set of all kinds of deep cuts. For every 1 car sold, they'd sell 1000 virtual tickets to an at home, rareaty event. They've had months to rehearse some obscure shit. Nope, greatest hits.
Or promote it as Metallica's greatest hits but with 3 new songs debuted, I'd find a way to maybe go to that, at least By Request had LOS in there.

This is a 'trying too hard to do something different' situation. A paid live streaming concert would have sufficed. They could have done a month of shows, one every Saturday, maybe even twice a week, and like Sic said, played around with different types of sets. Acoustic set, covers, rarities, etc. Missed opportunity to do something practical and cool instead of something impractically different, with obvious offerings and insane price.

I assumed the 4 downloads they are handing out are the 3 mp3s that have already been put out there to anyone that pre-ordered, plus one more which I guess was always coming anyway like Moth recently was

Absolutely agree with everything here apart from "crazily overpriced S&M2"....I really think they looked after us this time. That deluxe bundle has a lot of content for a reasonable price IMO.
Also, while it would have been great to get rarities, etc. , these guys havent played together since S&M2...they are going to be a bit rusty, a long way from thinking about piecing together some obscure song they've probably not listened to for a decade or more.

The album is coming out the day before the show, which is some well timed promo.
