Can barely tell the difference between the remastered and the original.

Of course you can't.
We can barely tell the difference between this new account you've made and the other 5-6 you've made the previous times you've quit and come back.

Trying to stick to the early mixes/drum takes/demos/riff tapes and not listen to the live stuff too much on Spotify until my actual boxset arrives.
The Wherever I May Roam rough mix from May 14th is the definitive version of the song...those power chords behind the interlude give that whole section a whole new life. That section was my favourite part of the song already but now with more audible Het guitars it's even better. Not to mention the bass sound holy shit.
Love the alternate interlude solo in the rough mix on Misery too...and the early vocal mix/performance on Tread is straight up AJFA.

So I've not heard any of the tracks, is there any difference? I mean TBA is sonically perfect, so I'm not sure what we're achieving here 🤔

I listened to the remaster, and main difference I could only pick up, is the bass sounded slightly more prominent, and I mean the chuggy part of the tone. I'm sure the mix is slightly brighter, though too much brightness would have been bad, it's already bright sounding.
So yeah, this album didn't need a remaster because it was done right the first time, so it seems barely anything was changed (to my ears). All it needs is volume.

Yeah, I mean, I'm gonna listen to that version now. It doesn't sound worse.

Is there any hope that the Death Magnetic reissue will be saved?

DM needs to be (well) remixed as well as remastered. I don't expect them to remix it though. They didn't bother to bass boost Justice.

Just figured I'd listen to that to see how different it sounds and holy shit at the bass. It's louder than the drums! It's almost as loud as the guitars! Would've been a massively different story if this is what the final album mix sounded like. Funny to also see how there's these random volume gains everywhere, like somebody was literally screwing with the faders live. e: I definitely didn't accidentally quote the wrong post, absolutely not, I'd never do that.

Vocals sound amazing and the kirk bits under chorus seem more prominent. I played this song to a mate who is quite happy with his original albums (hes not bought any previous remasters)..he is off to buy a copy of the remaster after sitting down to listen to Sad

So I've not heard any of the tracks, is there any difference? I mean TBA is sonically perfect, so I'm not sure what we're achieving here 🤔 There's more separation and clarity. I'm hearing things I hadn't noticed before. If anything, they took perfection and made it better. DM needs to be (well) remixed as well as remastered. I don't expect them to remix it though. They didn't bother to bass boost Justice. Don’t think it needs remixing. It needs the mastering redone and the levels brought down. That requires a remix. Just bringing it down won't work. They've done it twice now and it's still shit balls.

Sure I read somehow her that the tracks provided for mats ring were already brick walled which suggests that they were mixed hot. Surely that can be fixed without a full remix? Just reduce the levels comparatively across the desk.

As with the other remasters slightly more clarity and that's about it, not worth wasting money on.
RTL is the best so far.

Hmmm I disagree. Altering the output levels of the channels doesn’t class as a remix for me.
A remix would be setting all the faders to zero, removing all FX, setting EQ to 12 and restarting from the beginning. Making choices as to panning etc etc. Remix is making a fundamental change to the individual parts of the song. Reducing the master volume isn’t.
Loading up the session in ProTools and simply reducing the volume and removing any mastering plugins that are causing it to be hot I wouldn’t consider that a remix.
Having said all that: as long as they don’t make it sound as shut as it has so far, all good.

Man, Jason is always so entertaining and often interesting to listen to. It's his obvious passion that makes him so charismatic. Both of these are great.

Both of those things are a remix which result in the need for a new masterering.

I wouldn't call the Mastered for iTunes one shit balls. I'm still not fond of the mixing on that album but that versions sounds exactly like how they intended it to.

My box arrived today finally and I've kicked off exploring the DVD content. Man, the content of the Year and a Half outtakes DVD far exceeded my expectations. - A shitload more footage of drum tracks, solos, bass, Het riffs and vocals getting recorded. I love that shit the most and could watch hours and hours of it.
- Some more complete scenes that we only saw snippets of in the originals.
- Het being hesitant about the gang vocals on Don’t Tread On Me because it he’s worried about how it’ll be live, and Bob convincing him live will be fine coz the audience will sing it. I wonder if that’s why they didn’t play it for 21 years?
- Bob’s stern talk with Het on lyrics and themes. RE: Nothing Else Matters - “What does this song mean to you”… “Love, for something else”
- Holier’s lyrics being the only direct lyrics on the album not open to interpretation. “So Holier stands out…in a shitty way?”
- Kirk’s story about the ear plug guy haha
- Lars’ full, unedited temper tantrum, complete storm out. While the other guys start goofing off on a funk jam. So good.
- Het recording vocals, and you could tell a lot of these takes were early ones. Some were very rough and under developed. Really shows just how much time and effort Bob and Het put in to the vocal performances.
- Het is his most “Mighty Hetfield” years being a giddy nervous school boy at the Queen rehearsal and the lead up to it.
Loved it! Am about halfway through the Wherever We May Roam DVD, the first two performances of Sandman and Creep from those 1991 festival shows are A++ and aren’t far behind Moscow.
