Yeah, feels like yesterday. I remember the video dropping and the waiting with my buddies for the Top 5 at 5 countdown on MusicPlus, the French music channel, and cranking it everyday. That old man gave me the creeps, and the truck chasing the kid reminded me of Maximum Overdrive.

I should have figured that bringing up TBA to all of my older friends was going to result in them all saying how disappointed they were about the album when it came out. It made me think, well, I'm glad it was the first Metallica record I heard, because I got to enjoy it without any previous influence or anticipation I might have had like them.
Granted, I like to think I've got reasonable judgement in music regardless of whether a band changes, becomes more mainstream or what have you, if it's still 'good.' I think I would have ended up liking it anyway.
Especially with some of these people, I'm like 'dude, you listen to AC/DC and you have a problem with TBA? How hard is it to just listen to an album for what it is?' I can understand initial disappointment in thinking you were gonna get something else, but, damn, try being a little objective. Like someone once told me 'listen to every album like it's the artist's first, or better yet, a different artist's first. Never expect the previous album to come out again.'
I also roll my eyes when people call TBA 'over produced.' I have to say, that term is meaningless to me, since I hear people say it about all my favorite album productions. I guess I like 'over produced.' The guy that told me it's over produced likes Devin Townsend, nothing against Dev, but he's the most turbo, super (self) produced music there is in metal. TBA sounds killer, this is just nitpicking here.
It's like some people's childhoods are still scarred from TBA. The idealism, grandiose anticipation and letdowns that happen in childhood.

Those guys sound like a bunch losers, repeating the same old bash Metallica lines. Do they go on about haircuts and Napster, how Cliff was a God and screw Jason? Most likely. You said they listen to ACDC, right there, they lose any credibility at critiquing Metallica seriously. Fuck em Sig. TBA is like the perfect Metal album production wise. Do they say the same about Far Beyond Driven? Countdown to Extinction? Dirt? All greatly produced albums equal to TBA without the Metallica logo attached which no one ever seems to complain about.

Hey now, they're my friends. :) They have flaws, we all do. The 'hate Metallica' thing is a pretty trendy phenomenon. The Napster thing is definitely a common thing with people that decided to 'leave Metallica.' A newer friend I made, she wears a Metallica hoodie often, but when I talked to her about more recent times, she was like 'yeah, I stopped listening to them when the Napster thing happened.' Yeah, like I said, the one guy that told me TBA was over produced today, is a big Devin Townsend fan. DT albums are all super turbo outer space 'produced.' Funny enough, Dev once said there is only one person he would ever want to produce a record of his (he has always produced his own records) and that is Bob Rock. Devin loves TBA. He ended up getting a TBA-era Hetfield ESP Explorer back when you could get one made from their custom shop. He once said he was obsessed with the 'A Year in a Half' videos. I told him all this, he has not responded. Doubt he will. Not that it matters, like I said, odd childhood scars type of stuff.

I hate my friends, but I'm too old to invest in new ones.

Also, some one told me (another person shitting on TBA) they saw Metallica live in Copenhagen, 1991. They were saying 'Lars couldn't even play Sad But True!'.
Well, here's that performance. Lars didn't make any real mistakes. Only mess up here was James a bit with the lyrics.
I'm gonna guess what that guy thought was Lars messing up, was how they changed the timing of the 'bum bum bum bum' parts before the 'sad but true' lines. And he was expecting the timing to be like the album. So he remembers this as Lars not playing the song right.
tbh, I can't be bothered with getting into these things further with people some times. I'd rather complain about them elsewhere, heh.

For 20 years now I basically keep all my Metallica discussions (and other hobbies e.g. video games etc...) to online forums and people who are just as into and obsessed with the subject as me. My friends just aren't into the same stuff as me, or are only casually at best. If I bring up Metallica they'd be comments about Napster, selling out etc...which I have no interest in getting into. I'd much rather jump on this forum or Judas and write a 500 word post about the Black album guitar tone or which fills are different in Sad But True take 36 vs the album version. Sad Super nerdy, but true.

Found this, new to me. I guess we'll be getting alot of this kind of stuff. Very interesting to see the love for DTOM being THE single that would charge forward.

Cool but the elevator mix works better in that context in my opinion. Still rad to hear regardless.

So what is the context for this version of NEM? Was it supposed to be a b side, single, or just something they did special for this boxset?

Seeing how happy he was and how engaged he was made me so happy. Jason was my guy in the early days of my fandom. I was a bass player and took my cues from him: stage wise and playing wise.
Love that he was so into it and agreed to be a part of this. Miss him.

Nice to see Bruce giving credit where due. He seems to be a nice dude but I don't recall him having lots to say about bands other than Maiden

Bonus: A nice little story from Lars about his Iron Maiden fanboy days:
