So, 20 versions of Sandman, 20 versions of NEM, 7 Unforgiven, and 1 of the rest or something like that...? Yay😴 Maybe but you have to image that each might be stylistically different (St Vincent unlikely to be in the vein of Miley Cyrus etc....). Can't say I'm going to buy this covers album but I'll check it out on Spotify.

It appears not. I'm guessing a rights or lost masters issue.

The Unforgiven (139 BPM Take - January 29th, 1991)
I wonder what that will sound like. I mean it's the original tempo, right? I'm not sure what the difference between 70 bpm and 140 bpm is.

Bit of a shame they had Greg Fidelman mix that again when there already exists a pretty damn good quality version of that mixed by Randy Staub. Like, Fidelman's not that bad but he's not Randy Staub and they should've just had him do the mix on the songs that Staub didn't do. What we ended up with was a version of Sandman from Moscow '91 that's probably worse than the earlier mix with the modern Metallica sample snare and overemphasized hi-hats included. Would've been nice to have Staub's mixes as official audio after all these years.

LOL, I wasn't far off Seems more like 30 versions of NEM. Definitely interested in 10% of those covers, the other 90%... Not so much.

Very much doubt they would do that to archival releases (they're not Megadeth....). But hey, feel free to be a Grumpy-Gus.

I dunno, maybe the snare isn't a sample but it sounds pretty similar to all their recent productions so I wouldn't be surprised. Even Staub's version definitely uses samples so it's not that I'm even against that, just the particular sound they/Fidelman always seem to go for these days. e: Also, I'm pretty certain every Fidelman mixed re-release has used samples, so I dunno where you're getting that from anyway. Seattle '89 and some of the Metallica Mondays releases spring to mind.

I love Ghost, one of my top 3 bands, but I really didn't care for their live version of Sandman one bit. IMO Ghost could sound awesome covering one of the more dark songs like The God that failed or Misery. Oh well, maybe I will be pleasantly surprised by a studio version.
I'm looking forward to some of those weird hip-hop covers, the Roam one seems really cool. Cage the Elephant and the Chats as well.

Nothing in this trailer is in HD. wtf. Oh well, fans will just do the work for them. Probably wasn't going to buy the box set anyway, but I definitely won't now out of principle. They need to be AI upscaling their shit, it's doable now. They'll probably do it again later and try to resell it again. By then, everything they've ever released on video will be AI upscaled by fans and available on youtube for free. I think this is a pretty big fuck up on their part.
Meanwhile...

None of the source material is HD. They’re not going to spend money upscaling to release in a format that most people don’t have (Blu-ray). I don’t want footage from 91 upscaled. No matter how much you try it never looks quite right be user of the limitations of the masters. Plus….. who gives a shit really? Given the huge amount of content on offer you’re gonna complain about one tiny aspect of it? Jesus. Damned if they do, damned if they don’t.

Bluray players are abundant in homes in the developed world for many years now. (game consoles) Might as well not release TBA on vinyl. Doesn't the box set come with a cassette ffs? Upscaling would cost fuck all for Metallica to do. Again, fans are doing it for them. Either way, they could upscale all their old stuff and put it on streaming services. Upscaled looks a whole lot better to me. I know it has that soft, glossy look but it's a good trade off for overall sharper picture and more detail. Who gives a shit? IDK, let's check in a few years from now and see how many views all of the fan upscaled videos have. Why watch crappier quality video when higher quality video exists? If upscaled video on something exists, that's what I'm watching from now on. People in comments have been asking for this for stuff like Live Shit for years. Like I said I wasn't gonna buy the box set anyway, I was just more making a point. Here's a better point. Why 'remaster' TBA? It's just gonna sound louder and more trebley. Most remasters are loudness wars bullshit. It was done right the first time. Turn up the volume.

Yeah I’m holding off on that. I’ll keep an eye on it on Amazon. I already have two previous Metallica books by Halfin and I’ve not looked at them in years so not sure about the need to buy a picture book to be honest.

Side by side wave comparison shows very little change. To my ears, the remaster Sandman is neither louder nor more trebley. As for your assertions that all the snares have been sampled for the Greg Fidelman remixes.... I don't think so. It's not sampled just mixed differently. I've just A/B-ed it. The whole Seattle show is mixed differently. The DVD runs quite hot compared to the new remix.

The Unforgiven (139 BPM Take - January 29th, 1991) I wonder what that will sound like. I mean it's the original tempo, right? I'm not sure what the difference between 70 bpm and 140 bpm is. Yeah that's a curious one. Looking forward to hearing that. I wonder if the earlier versions of it were at a faster/slower BPM and this was the one where the fond the right groove?

The only thing I think I’m disappointed about is the lack of including Bob Rock in some way. But maybe he’s included in the book?
