As opposed to.... all the other times? You remember the gap between SA and DM?! This is nothing new. We live in a world where we expect tweets and posts every 5 minutes. Remember back in the day when you'd hear fuck all for years until an article appeared in Kerrang? Same thing. I get it. But what are they supposed to announce? "Hey.. ahhhmmmmm Lars here duder. Ahhhhhm I'm ahhhhhhm skiing right now ahhhhmmmm and ahhhhhhhmmm wanna?!?! DUDER?!?! DUUUUUUDER?!?!? Love from ahhhhhmm your little Danish friend." Yes, that's exactly what they could do to keep interest in the band. A Lars babble would for sure help things. There might have been long gaps between albums before, but there was ALWAYS something going on. Even if it was just touring, new vids, fun stuff etc would appear pretty often. Now there's absolutely nothing. Their touring cycles have also become so utterly uninteresting that I doubt even the remaining die hards gives a shit. I get it, they are old and can't be arsed putting energy into anything anymore, that's fine. But they can't expect people to be remotely interested in anything they do anymore. Yesterday I went into Metallica.com, for the first time in 2-3 years, and I can see why I never visit anymore. I could also see that none of their shows have sold out. Other than the gig in Denmark, which were basically sold out before they were announced. Again, I would also be exhausted for years of media fuckery if I were them. But I don't understand their gameplan anymore, just tell it like it is. How long are they in the process of a new album, are they even working on one ? All it takes is a 2 min update to calm the waters. But nooo, we all have to go guessing for 5 years if an album is on the way or not. It's down right stupid at this point in their carrier. Just spill the beans I think they should only tour for 2-3 years after the release of an album, it's been excessive.

Also worth noting this is by far the largest time we’ve gone without new Metallica music.
2000 - I Disappear 2003 - St Anger 2006 - New Songs 2008 - Death Magnetic 2011 - Lulu, Beyond Magnetic 2014 - Lords of Summer, covers 2016 - Hardwired … 2022 - Kirk’s EP so far

I'm seeing them in two weeks. I'm not expecting any brand new songs, of course, but at least a couple of deep cuts. Fixxxer? Unforgiven 2? Carpe Diem?

I hope this post ages poorly but I have zero hope for a new album this year. Touring is starting up again and it's pretty consistent.
But hey, 2023 would mean 7 years instead of 8 years like last time... Yay?

Feels just like yesterday that HWTSD leaked and we had a surge of new members logging in here trying to hear it...and some undercover narc lady snooping around.

Back then when the album leaked/ came out I stayed away from forums until I had digested the record, I didn't want my views to be "contaminated". Then when I had formed an opinion of how good/ bad it was I went back to post/ check on the official ones.

Lars's got his recording bass drums set up, so yeah, potentially. Usually those only appear once they're actually putting something down based on the footage from the DM and HTSD sessions (although in the former's case the drums weren't tracked at HQ anyway, so the only thing that really changed was more cymbals than usual). If not full-on drum tracks then at least latter stage demos.

They're just rehearsing for the shows which are starting up again tomorrow.

They wouldn’t have two mics on the snare and some of their fancier shit set up for just rehearsing. I don’t want to say we should be hyped up but if that picture is current could very well be doing real drum takes.

Lars does actually normally use two mics on the snare top side, but the ones he's got in the photo look like proper recording mics rather than his usual touring setup, yeah. Same with the tom mics. Also worth noting is the hi-hats, I don't think Lars normally has his old 90s Z series hi-hats setup just for rehearsals. I honestly don't know why he changes so many things around since it seems like it'd be easier to just leave the recording setup at HQ at all times and rehearse for tours on that, but it is admittedly convenient for enabling wild speculation about what they're doing!

"Let's fucking get on with it" = Let's announce this new record to the world already. But we still need to give Kirk's thing a week or 2 to breathe. Be patient kids, it's coming"

Dan confirmed the pic is from the South American tour rehearsals, which most likely took place after working/ recording for the new album.

The only thing that makes me think they're working on something are those two random shows in Buffalo and Pittsburgh they announced a couple months ago. I don't think it's related to an album, but those two cities 3 hours apart to randomly get shows not part of a tour leg is... kinda strange. I've been figuring they were planning on shooting some sort of video at them. But for what I'm not sure.

Kirk was quoted recently saying they had been working but couldn't give any further details.

I think we’re in for another long wait, they seem to prefer touring than writing these days.

I've always championed the idea of having 4 EPs released over the course of one year; each 4-track album representing a different style of heavy metal. Green Day did something similar in 2012, only that they actually put out 3 LPs.

I'd be happy to see new songs released this way - might remove what ever pressure they feel by focussing on smaller projects too
Don't think it needs to have "rules" about metal styles though, just Metallica music will do.

I hate EP's. A cd that's over in 15 mins and pay full price for it? Fuck that shit.
