Even without knowing TEOTL and ANL, the sections of those songs in The New Song sound very shoe-horned in there. With a little tweaking and removing those parts, Death Is Not the End would've made a fine studio song.

This reminded me how terrible that song was. It's so bad. Love the intro and the double bass though.

Definitely not the best, but really embodies the transition between SA and DM. I personally really like the main riff too, even though James seemed to always play it pretty sloppy.

Also, releasing the '98 version of Killing Time in today's climate would be extremely unwise, so there's that too. ? Please elaborate. Much later in the late 1990s after Metallica covered "Killing Time" in 1991 as a B-side for "The Unforgiven", there was renewed interest for Sweet Savage. Fuelled by this interest, the band reformed and signed to Neat Records in 1996, releasing their first studio album entitled Killing Time. The original lyrics to the track, which Metallica covered, (the original Sweet Savage version and the Metallica cover can both easily be found on YouTube) had racial overtones that have since been removed from all lyrics sheets." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweet_Savage1min 18sec But I've just re-listened to the Unforgiven single version and there is no racsits epithet in the Metallica version so that chunk from Wikipedia is slightly misleading as it implies that teh Metallica version is the same as the '81 original version.

Yeah, that's about it. But the thing is, in 1998, James sang the original words and not the new ones on the original B-side they did. Which somehow nobody noticed and the performance was aired on MTV unedited.
The song, in its Randy Staub mixed version from one of the Garage Inc. single release B-sides (I think) is on YouTube and you can quite clearly hear and see that James indeed sings the original lyrics both times they appear. Which, well, aren't "killer kid" but something a bit more unfortunate. Hence why I think its best if the band steers clear from that performance in the future.

I don't know why but it's kind of wild to me they picked a show that has "The New Song".
Also, Lars was on fire back then.

Between the box sets, live videos with some funny fuck-ups, and the choices for these shows, it seems like the guys have moved into a "fuck it, put it all out there" attitude. And I'm so here for it.
Next up, a pro-mixed version of The Other New Song!

The New Song is such a weird piece of music. I can't believe they were serious with it for a while because none of it's just all that good. The best bits are the ones they used in other songs, while the riffs are just kind of eh and the lyrics... yeah, no. At least those would be easy to fix, it's much harder to get rid of uninteresting riffs.
I can't believe I'm saying this but Rick Rubin had the right call when he made them nix this and Vulturus.

I think the Coke Dayz ended in 2004? So more just residual coke. Definitely wore off a couple years later though.

It was either 2006 or 2008, and I think he doesn't remember which it was either. Judging by his '06 era performances, probably the latter. As far as being utterly insane on the drums goes, Bremen '04 was probably him at his best/worst. If you believe the rumors it was because of his messy divorce leading to overindulgence in Colombian turbo powder.

That makes sense. I always thought Bremen seemed incredibly coked out, but I thought he quit after (what I believed was) the coke-related meltdown that made him not able to play Download in 2004. That sounds like misinformation now though.
Edit: Just looked up and realized Download was also before Bremen.

So I had this show playing extremely loud last night, lets try and make it feel like we are there volume. I found it really cool they chose this show to put up. Off all the hundreds of shows they could have chosen they chose one of my all time favourites. I know this set very well so it was a huge treat to be able to watch it. The show has particular memories for me. My son was born not long before this date 666 and I was spending more time at home than normal. With a new song debuted I grabbed the audio and made a CD which got spun a lot and the mp3s went on to my player. On one of those afternoons I was up on my roof cleaning the gutters. Its quite a high roof and gives me views for quite away out and around and I remember still so well just sitting up there with my headphones listening to MoP (and the New Song). Them playing Orion was a huge deal back then (thanks Rob). It was winter here but this day was sunny and I just felt on top of the world. This set takes me back to that so vividly. Maybe thats why I have always liked the DINTE - this version in particular. Cool intro and double bass bits. Vulturous was well wide of the mark though. There's a bit just before DINTE, James says Its OK its only Water. All these years I thought he was referring to a drink he had just taken and was telling the crowd he is off the booze, Look, no beer just water, his rehab time was maybe still fresh in my mind and thats how my brain pieced it together. Turns out he was talking about the rain

In some interview I think Lars said it ended in 2008 I wouldn't be surprised if he still does it. I remember reading a new interview in 07 saying he gave it up in 04. But then he later said he gave it up in 07.

Sorry, I'm having a hard time understanding. Killing Time was recorded during the warm up for TBA (along with, Stone Cold Crazy and So What). That makes these three songs (technically) 1990 versions, KT was released in Nov 91 as a b side to Unforgiven. What are the 98 versions? From Garage Inc? I presumed those were just the version from 1990. Are they different to the single versions? I've also not been able to find a version of the song online where James allegedly sings the racist lyrics. Can you point me to a link?

Here's the performance in question, aired on MTV and with the CD audio:

Well there you go, learn something new every day. I was never familiar with the original before Metallica covered it and never heard the different lyric sung in the live version until you pointed it out.

I wonder what licensing looks like for these streams. They've had covers in the shows, but they've ever aired Ecstasy (though that is a live cover vs the original recording).

It’ll be because most of the video so far (pre-Nugs) are feeds for the house screens, during Ecstasy they have a video playing so the cameras are probably not filming at that point.

‘89 show tonight. Probably a terrible take, but we already have the pinnacle of that tour in the form of Seattle ‘89 since the sets are largely the same. so I’m not too hyped about it. But it’s still awesome to see them covering all years, and it’s cool to have this just as more content.

Wow, cool show. At the beginning, the filming from the side of the stage was cool, and even though I saw the setlist, I forgot that they played "The Wait", and when it started, I was like "Oh yay!"
