Both Bleeding and Devils Dance were nice surprises when they started. NEM right after Whiplash was an odd choice though. And dont recall Last Caress and So What played together like that before either. James couldnt bring himself to use all the swear words haha I wonder what year he sang all the swear words in So what the last time. Maybe I'll do some research.

Pretty unremarkable show tonight, but it was interesting to hear all of the S&M vocal nuances in a different show (like the MASTER OF PUPPETS PULLING THE STRINGS YEEAH-E-YEAH! in the last chorus). I always forget those were all done on purpose for a couple of years straight, not just improv.
It's also cool to have the 97 show along with this now. It really shows their transition out of the Load-era, both in terms of hair and setlist picks.

Not the biggest fan of the era due to Het's vocals and all the "baby"'s added to songs...but really love the performance of the Load songs from this era. This show had a great performance of Bleeding Me and King Nothing,.

I take baby over metallica like a family any day. Plus from mid to late 90's Het acted like a boss. I mean for some it may be a conceit for others pure badassery depends on your taste.

Key word is "acted". Was so fake and rockstary. What came across as natural banter (still with a bit of attitude) on the Black album tour became scripted cringe in the mid-late 90s. Each to his own but I can do without all the Het grabbing his own crotch, beating his chest, foot stomping and making the crowd yell "WE DONT GIVE A SHIT". Then all the unnecessary "babys" ad-libbed all through the songs "my ties a severed clean baby!" *shudders* ... then all the over-singing I think I still have PTSD from that first time I saw Cunning Stunts after growing up watching Live Shit. The only thing that comes close to that level of cringe for me in modern Metallica is the the friggen drum jam they do in the middle of Now That We're Dead.

I can't tell when that really started. Even by 1993 there were some aspects of their live show that seemed very "acted", but I know they really got into the swing of it when they introduced the stage collapse and opening jams (even though those were ironically very off the cuff).

I'd love to be a fly on the wall while James and Lars script that stuff.
"Ok James, here you're gonna say baby 3 times, but you got to say it less stock then you say it during Bells"
"Ok, but I want to knell on my left knee, while looking east"
"No, you have to be looking south because I'm going to spit into the crowd during those DAH DAH DAH punches"

Anyone have a favorite stream so far? Mine is a toss up between Germany 2015 for the set and Copenhagen 2009 for the nostalgia of my first year as a super fan.

90's shows (Muskegon 91, SLC 97, Bogota 99) and honorable mention to Copenhagen 09 for sentimental reason - first metallica gig I've been to.

Just caught up on this and I'm surprised no one has talked about Lars' intro... The fact that he mentions the new drum mics. Based on recent interviews I get the feeling they're trying to record things from home. Maybe the acoustic version of Blackened was a test to see if it could work.
Or maybe I'm just overthinking it.

No I don't think you're overthinking it. I think it is safe to assume that they are recording something. I just hope that it is not acoustic renditions of their songs. Out of 3 (I think) possibilities (new stuff, covers, acousting renditions) it is the one that I'm the least eager to hear.

Based on Rob's recent comments, they're clearly sending a lot of demos back and forth. I can almost guarantee they won't record an album itself from home given how intense of a micing treatment Fidelman likes to do, especially on the drums. And because of how much jamming James and Lars does to put the final arrangements together. Buuuuut it definitely seems like they're getting those early writing stages done from home. If no shows happen until Summer 2021, I could see them putting an album together by then.
Edit: Removed two out of the three "definitely"s I used because I obviously luv that word.

How that might translate into actual recording is anyone's guess. They still have touring commitments so that'll take up the first chunk of free space they have. I think a new album is at least 2 years away. But we can live in hope......

They won't play any single gig in 2020 This. I think this is gonna be the biggest break they've taken from shows since Jason leaving.
But I can see them getting into the studio way sooner than getting on stage. It's also gimmicky enough where Lars would want to record a whole album during quarantine just to say they did, haha.
Edit: I just looked it up and I didn't realize they took 14ish months off from tour while recording TBA, and 12 months for Load. They definitely didn't take a break even close to that for DM or HTSD.

I think Lars is at HQ so it's not out of the question that Fidelman is there recording the drums.

I don't personally mind the acting, as long as it feels right in the context of the show. The Load tour was very much rockstar swagger and ego bullshit, so it worked in context of that. Judging by backstage accounts, that was the era when James and Lars were at the peak of being full of themselves and I definitely see that in the live recordings from the era, from the acted over-the-top nonsense on Cunning Stunts (incl. Lars spitting his drink to the audience) to the '97 Hamburg gig with pretty boy Hetfield pulling the cameraman aside by the camera's wire because he was in the way.
That said, So What is all about the acting and being outrageously over the top. If you're not willing to commit to that and say the oh-so-naughty cunt word, don't play the God damned song at all. Nobody enjoys the song when you start pussyfooting with it, it's supposed to be a sexually explicit satire and all of that completely falls apart with self-censoring. I think James probably recognized that since it's not been a setlist feature since then, other than in 2011 when Animal sang it.

Lisbon 07 up next...I would say one of my favourite shows to listen to up until the 2012 era. Haven't heard it for a long time now, but great vocals and energy from Het and Justice played for the first time since 89. Couldn't believe that at the time! I never thought they would play that song again

This is right before I got into the band so I always overlooked this year since it seemed at the time like there was nothing notable about it over 2008-09. So I’m looking forward to watching!

The great thing about the 06/07 years was it the next stage of them embracing their past. I assume it was the Rick Rubin influence, and it started with the Puppets anniversary shows.
Instead of songs like Puppets being sung and performed as they had been since the mid 90s, Hetfield's vocal delivery got completely reworked (for the better) and was much more like the album versions. Parts they had traditionally cut from songs were back. It was like they looked at parts of their live performance and asked "why do we do it this way?" and changed things up.
Hetfield really had some fire and energy again. It was the end of the "rehab James" era where he allowed some of his personality back into his life and his band. Look out for his energy in Horsemen in particular (going from memory here so could be wrong) from this show.

James voice was ROUGH at times though. However Lars didn’t deteriorate nearly as fast as people said he did. I think his true anti-peak (valley? worst?) was 2010-2011. Everyone thought he got worse as soon as LiveMet came out because of how dreadful some of those mixes were.

I wouldn't say 2010 was even his worst. He was very sloppy, sure, but they played a lot of songs ridiculously fast so it's kind of offset by that. Master of Puppets from one of the Big 4 shows in 2010 for example is heinously fast and it's very impressive considering his age, messy and fill-heavy as it is. After that he did definitely start getting worse and worse with tempos, fills and just general feel for the songs, but those issues I would argue have been present ever since 2003 at least and just kept getting worse every year.
