Which ones do you love and which do you hate? Is playing hyper fast where it's at or is it playing low and slow? Does it have to be technical or can it just be laid back and carefree? Which genre is truly the best within these categories? The purpose of this thread is to figure that out. Also here's a meme I made a while back. This doesn't mean I hate all thrash metal but the majority of it is certainly TRASH metal for me.

I don't really care about genres. If a song or a band sounds good to me, that's all I care about.

Surely there has to be a "trend" of music bearing similar resemblance that you keep coming back to. As well as ones that you don't enjoy that often end up being of the same influence.

I like anything that evokes emotion from me. It has to make the hairs on my arms stand up, whisk me away to some haunted forest, give me the feels for my long ago childhood, make me went to ride in a helicopter shooting the Vietcong, battle robots from across the universe, throw away my life and become a pirate and say fuck all responsibilities, watch the world burn, fall in love, start a revolution, battle with my viking brothers.
Anything that gives me those kind of feelings will always bring me back for more, forever.
Some generic, cut and paste, Metal or rock song/band will never keep my attention for long.
Anything from old time 50s music to gothic vampire black metal, if it gives the feels, it's A+ in my books.
While cleaning the house or walking, my play list can jump around from The Shirelles, to CCR, to king Diamond, to Lady Gaga, to Dragon Force, to Metallica, to Alestorm, Cyprus Hill, to Cradle of Filth and then back to Paul Anka.

No one really has a genuine answer about how rock/metal sounds best. So far it's been all "I like music that makes me feel good yea man we should all love eachother peace out dudes".
Come on you guys can do better than that.

Come on you guys can do better than that. I'm not sure the problem here is us, but the way you propose questions. (same with the downtuning thread) "No one really has a genuine answer about how rock/metal sounds best." I judge music by personal taste on individual musicians/bands, not by genres. I'd have to sit and take way more consideration of something I never do, to try and answer such a question. There isn't any genre that 'sounds' best, even if there is somehow, I wouldn't spend time trying to figure that out. If I were like 16 I'd probably just give you an easy fanboy answer to the question due to narrow tastes and experience.

I definetley prefer progressive metal over all other forms. By progressive metal I mean bands like Tool, Gojira, Porcupine Tree, Opeth etc. Just something about long complex songs where all the instruments shine and the song has a chance to build up to something. Not to sound pretentious, but most other types of metal just seem lame and boring to me. Stoner metal with progressive influences like Elder is also awesome. I also like a lot of djent and doom metal I suppose. And some thrash. And little bits of all the other genres, even nu metal haha.

Anything without cookie monster vocals is fine by me. There can be a little screaming and even some growling but not a whole song.

see i love this
but i also love this
and this is class too
i amn't sure what unite these. i think there is an underlying "punk"/genuine alternative aesthetic and ethos to these pieces/artists but formally they are quite distinct within the wider genre of metal, perhaps there is a phenomenological investigation that needs to be made regarding my tastes however ultimately i suspect thz=at the best metal is the friends we make laong the way.
Ever wonder why supermarkets only sell larger in those pissy little 440ml cans? Who are these c+nts? it's offensive. up here you tend to see more 500ml cans, which is fine and acceptable, but the pint can is what you want.
£5-6 for four pints will do

Alright, I have better personal answer. When I thought of my top band list, none of them are in the same genre/sub genre. They are all either pioneers of a genre, or in an unnameable sub genre of their own. They are all unique. I like good, unique bands, not genres. When it comes to genres, at the most, I might like 3 bands, but they won't all be on my top 20, because there is gonna be only 1 great one to me.

I like many thrash metal bands, I dislike many thrash metal bands. I might like just one song from a band. I might like one artist from a particular genre, or have thus far enjoyed everything I've heard from one genre. Yes, a large part of what I listen is rock/metal, but there's a lot of crap there also, and I listen to a shitload of other types of music, too. So I can't honestly pinpoint one particular subtype.

I mean I kinda agree on Tool. They're overrated and not really all they're cracked up to be, not even close really, but AT LEAST they're trying to do something different than what the majority of bands do nowadays.
I'd still much prefer to be listening to stoner metal though.

Back to your OG avatar I see, hetfieldsrage. Good on ya buddy.
Also stoner metal is far superior to that of any other metal genre if I didn't already make it clear that's what I think by posting 4 songs of that above. For rock I would say southern or psychedelic/space rock prevails.
